So much lost potential. Many fallen trees to contend with. I assume from hurricane Matthew last year. There were no maps or brochures available. The tails are not marked well enough to be able to follow without a map. Stations along the trails are numbered, but again, without a brochure or something to reference they only become objects to find amongst an overgrown area.
I drove 1.5 hours with my children for them to experience a part of American history. The stockade itself was not what we had hoped for, but we did get some exercise and spend time with each other.
The stockades are located behind Florence National Cemetery. These grounds were used by the stockade as well. This is a relatively small cemetery. I stopped here with my children. Rather than simply hear about fallen heroes on the news, read about it in a book, or hear about it in a one-line statement. We were able to walk amongst them and visit with a fellow Marine while we were there. I believe it was impactful to them.
